Snopes leans mostly left. I guess they couldn't really bring themselves to take the liberals to task on this one like they should, so they wimped out with "we'll just present both sides."
Caribou population has went up considerably since drilling began...
Goodness, I had no idea Snopes could tap dance like that. Lefty wonks. My family has extensive experience with the Alaska pipeline and oil industry, and the only real impact made on anyone up there are the humans during the mosquito season.
I normally really enjoy reading your blog but that article was extremely biased. First I would like to say that I honestly have no idea what the effects of oil drilling will have in the area, but I take particular offense to the area being labeled as a "barren wasteland". I have spent the last three months in Barrow, Alaska working for the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium as an NSF researcher. I can personally attest that the North Slope is teeming with life. I admit the area does look barren, but it is a thriving ecosystem. I would suggest visiting the Exploratorium website (http://icestories.exploratorium.edu/dispatches/) to learn more about the science being conducted in the Alaskan Arctic (as well as other Arctic areas).
Furthermore I would also like to mention that any negative consequences to drilling, however small, will most likely be aplified for the native communities since the majority of people rely mainly on subsistence hunting for survival.
In the end, the oil will be drilled. 5 years from now or 50.
