You know that not everyone signed on the 4th? Some signed more that month or two later. Also, the actual separation from England occurred on July 2nd. The 4th was when the declaration was adopted in it revised form. It was read aloud over the next week or so in various colonies. John Adams actually thought the 2nd would be celebrated as Independence Day.

Yes, that's right, Adams and Jefferson died the same day on July 4th 1826. Crazy wild stuff.
