Confessions of a Drug Addict
...to The Angry Pharmacist:
"I would like to explain some stuff to you from the addicts point of view. It's a growing problem, prescription pain killer addiction. I blame everyone for this. It's not 100% the addicts fault.
Maybe put some blame on the MD's who get the person addicted by giving high doses of the pain meds, and give refills and believe the crap about them losing their script, and losing their meds and so on, vacation refills. Blame should be placed on the ER who treats the seeker with more morphine/demoral/dilaudid, they know he/she is an addict, their [sic] there 3 x a week with a migraine, but yet they give the pain meds. The insurance company who keeps authorizing the refills."

This is the main reason my kid does not take pain meds. Even tho she'll be hurting pretty bad. She once stated people pop too many pills and just need to work thru their pain.
Great post, as always. Addicts think they're only hurting themselves, but my Mom and my foster son's Mom are both addicts, and I disagree. It's me intercepting the midnight phone calls from both these women, begging my three teenage sons to bring them drugs or money. They justify it by saying they "need it".
interesting post. My "Patient-Centered Medicine" class teaches us that patient autonomy is king. If they say they are feeling pain, then damnit... you better do something about it.
And God forbid we do something that might lower our patient sat scores!
Ryan---I graduated in 2003 and no one EVER mentioned drug-seeking. "The pain is what the patient says it is when the patient says it is" has bred a nation of Perkie addicts. Guess who came up with that? Yep. JCAHO.
ohhh get over it!!! it is not your money , your medicine, your family mem ber its your job,and you are not in charge !! now be a good doc and do your duty!! don't forget to wash the mercedes this weekend!!!!
Oh, but I am in charge.
Motrin is a painkiller too, remember.
don't get me wrong scalpel! I admire you or I wouldn't have bookmarked your page, and visit and read your posts almost everyday, and I definatley agree with you on witholding dilaudid morphine,etc.. to patients who ARE drug addicted.only and without any pain, other than their withdrawls, LOL but do you sometimes have to stop and think is he or she really in pain? and do I know 100% for sure? probably not if they are good at acting, but that is not the entire patient line-up, and there are some who need relief!! and I know for a fact you wouldn't hesitate to free that patient of pain, tha's why I read all of our threads, you seem like a good man, who like all humans need a break from the other side of treatments such as those liars, and waste of timers, so have a margarita on me!! LOL if you ever come to California,, I'll be here waiting!! have a great rest of the week!!! Hugs, Stac ...
i love the pts. who when asked to rate their pain on a scale from 0-10 0 being no pain, 10 being the worst pain, always rate their pain a 10. if you are sitting here talking to me, your pain is most definitely not a 10.
Yep, that's an addict..blame everyone else.
Addicts are actually only hurting themselves. It is up to those around them to exercise some sort of damage control. Consider it as a form of disease, as there is actually a disease process. As with Borderline Personality Disorder, they aren't good manipulators,(Lineham 1991). No longer the person you know? well yes, but there is a person still
there. A much less functional person, with distorted thoughts and perceptions. Have a mind about that when dealing with an addicted person.
