Why I Carry a Gun
I carry a gun because I can.
I carry a gun because I love my family, and I consider it my responsibility to protect them from harm. I value my life and the lives of my family more than anything else in the world. If we were ever threatened, I'd rather die with a gun in my hand than watch helplessly while the ones I love were brutalized.
I realize that I cannot depend on anyone else for protection. When seconds count, the police are minutes away.
I carry a gun because the safest place to keep a loaded gun is on your person at all times. An unloaded gun is as useless as a paperweight, and a gun in the safe is no help when you need a gun RIGHT NOW.
I carry a gun because even though I'm a big strong intelligent man, without a gun I would be no match for a drug-crazed skinny punk who had one.
I carry a gun because I have trained myself to use it properly, and I know that if required I would do so without hesitation.
I carry a revolver because when I pull the trigger, it always goes BOOM. I don't have to worry about a safety, or wonder if there is a round in the chamber, or whether it might jam. The heavy trigger pull ensures that the gun is not going to fire accidentally. Plus it is so lightweight, it conceals easily in a pocket without bothering me.

Amen, amen, and amen.
Well said.
The members of your family and your close friends are very lucky to have you!
totally agree. What the gunconrol freaks do not realize is that the only ones left with guns afer you imppose all these laws are the criminals, who will get guns anyway possible and dont care about laws anyways, hence "criminals" and the government, which is alos a very scary thought. There was a reason that the right to bear arms is so far up on the Bill of Rights.
Dangit, I need to take that concealed carry class so I can get my permit. Thanks for the reminder.
I've got very steady hands and thrive under pressure.
High five to you, Scalpel. Out here in "The OC," I could be drawn and quartered for even having those thoughts.
The gun culture in America is nuts. Makes for good surgical training though!
Lynn and Anon:
All the more reason to carry.
I work as an RN in a large clinic, and have always thought in the back of my mind "what would I do if a patient decides to come in and go postal". We're not allowed guns "on campus", yet I'm concerned that I might need my S&W .357 someday at work....
Amen.
I'm a fellow TX-licensed CHLer, just with a Glock 23 instead of a wheelgun.
"I carry a gun because even though I'm a big strong intelligent man" ...and your a doctor? Okay Scalpel...those qualities make you a prime candidate to be one of the leading ER Docs in a new made for TV medical drama-Texas style. Move over Grey's anatomy! ;)
Good post! I agree with Bohica...the criminals will always find a way to get the guns illegally.
On the negative side...years ago...one of my coworkers lost a 10 year old son to a gun accident. the boys were playing at the neighbor's across the street and found the gun that was up in the parent's bedroom closet.
Also years ago...one of our doc's wives answered her door 8 in the morning and was brutally attacked by someone wandering through the neighborhood. In the end she got through it and the guy was caught. We are a rural or now semi-rural community and sadly these things do happen.
Well written. I wish I could carry concealed now.
Me too brother.

Of course, Scalpel, you know that there are plenty of folks who'd feel safer if you were disarmed. That's another thing entirely from BEING safer, but F logic
I told my dad about your post and now we're planning on going shooting together. And he really thinks I should get a concealed handgun license too! Way to bring a family together :)
Good for you, Sarah!
"...there are plenty of folks who'd feel safer if you were disarmed."
And they are welcome to try, but they wouldn't feel safer for very long.
Definitely a Texan.
I carry because I wear seat belts, have fire extinguishers in the house and car, and lock my doors. It's just logical that if I prepare for other emergencies, I should prepare for the ones that are becoming just as likely.
I carry a revolver because .357 Magnum is as much firepower as I can get in a package that small without things getting silly. (I suppose I could get someone to make me a .500 Magnum derringer, but that would be well into the silly range.)
OTOH, if I'm not working that day and can dress the way I want, I carry either a high-capacity 9mm or a full-size 1911.
I just put up a post that you might find of interest!
wow. was expecting a few dissenters. just bought the wife a weapon she likes.
Just sent off the paperwork for my concealed permit here in FL. Have been wanting to for a while. Especially wanted it for when the wife and I travel. Plus once rotations start I'll traveling back and forth at all times of night/day.
I find this post deeply worrying. In terms of your needing to carry a weapon because of so many armed lunatics on the street:
which came first, the chicken or the egg?
Here in the UK we manage pretty well without wholescale carrying of arms.
Elaine, 20 years ago in the U.K. You had less gun conrol than you do now. You also had less crime in particular Violent crime. The less the poplace are able to defend themselves legally from violent assault, the more the are victims of violent assault.
Oh man! Those were some grizzly stories. It is a shame what some humans can do to each other--and at random, too! I hope all those murderers get the chair, or have to suck on some cyanide. But that does nothing to replace the lives they took, nor does the pain and fear add up to what they did to their victims!
I am not scared of anything (now), and have faith in my ability to defend myself. And I sleep right next to my sword and a good pair of nunchucks, with other weapons stashed around the house. But maybe I should get a heater. I think I am eligible for concealed carry in Wyoming, and I wouldn't hesitate to fire more rounds than Al Pacino if I had to defend myself or somebody! I don't like revolvers though. Clipped handguns are nice!
Dear Scalpel, I think I love you.
Do you have a big, strong, intelligent, protective, single brother?
I would just stab him in the eye with a chopstick. I keep a pair next to my bed.
To Elaine: Which came first? Human nature.... there's always going to be "lunatics" that are out to harm other people using whatever method they have.
Disarming people via tighter gun control only seems to disarm the lawful citizens, the lunatics aren't going to turn over their weapons b/c they're told to.
With the recent CO church shooting, the only standing between the gunmen and MANY more deaths was that church member w/ a concealed gun who was in the right place at the right time.
You might find this interesting.
I DON'T carry a gun b/c all my family and everyone I personally know has survived fine without one. But that's just me :)
I hope that keeps working out for you. It probably will.
You are so right :) I live in Finland and after joining the EU the influx of immigrants/refugees is ruining the country. In the urban areas the violent crime has skyrocketed and everyone in my family has suddenly decided to take up a new hobby; "hunting" (you need to either hunt or practice target shooting to get a license to carry a gun in Finland).
Soon I'll turn 18 and then I'm gonna take up "hunting" too LOL!
Superb post, Scalpel. I have had a CHL since they became available here in TX.
The women commenters who either were among the negatives or were in the positive group, but don't shoot their own selves, please just go to the range ONE time, with a .22 pistol and an experienced instructor.
Shooting well is the most empowering activity I have EVER engaged in. A .22 has virtually no recoil and isn't very loud, but wear hearing protection anyway.
It's the most fun you can have with all your clothes on, I promise.
"Elaine, 20 years ago in the U.K. You had less gun conrol than you do now. You also had less crime in particular Violent crime. The less the poplace are able to defend themselves legally from violent assault, the more the are victims of violent assault."
Mark that is totally incorrect. Violent crime is statisticaly far lower than it was 20yrs ago.
I want to get a concealment license. I'm only 14 and can't own a gun, but I'm buying one right when I turn 18 (I'll probably get a 9mm). The amount of gangsters in my area (primarily crips) is increasing greatly and I need a way to defend myself. I carry around a pocket knife at all times but I doubt that would do much good against someone with a gun. Anyway do you have to be 21 to get a concealment license?
To Elaine in the UK.
Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. B.Franklin
