Me, Friendly?
I was recently asked to write a post on another blog as a guest blogger, something I'd never done before. When I saw that Dr. A had preceded me as a guest blogger on the site, I was honored to be in such fine company. I knew immediately what I was going to write about too...tips to make an ER visit go more smoothly. Then Dominic e-mailed me to say that Kim had already guest-blogged on that topic. Obviously Kim is a blogstress of the highest order, so she'd already nailed it. But since I have the delicacy and maneuverability of a freight train, I proceeded to add some of my ideas to her topic.
The big question was, could I be friendly enough for the MedFriendly site? I had to bite my lip a few times (and delete a few lines), but I think it turned out well. Thanks to Dominic Carone, Ph.D for hosting me, and go check out his site. It's a very patient-friendly site that seems to have been around for quite a while, and it is certainly worth a look.

Bravo.
I enjoyed.
I want to see the lines you deleted.
I agree with White Coat, the underlying tension behind the written words is almost palpable.
Maybe that's just because we know you over here!
nice work^.^
I must be thick as a plank. I didn't see anything terse or tense. What I did see is great advice. May I never need an ER trip (crossing self).
I'm curious about the unedited version as well. But, well done nonetheless. A prospective ER visit is well covered by scalpel and kim.
Awesome! That was great. And true!
Loved your post, Scalpel. I actually had an ER visit last week, due to falling onto my shoulder from a ladder (oops...). The ER doc was great, but, for the first time (in all the times my family and I been there), the nurses were lousy. As a nurse, I was quite disappointed in them(no, the ER wasn't busy...but there was something quite fascinating on one of the computers I guess, as 99% of the nurses were clustered around it.)
Great--and friendly--post. Yep, I want to see the deleted lines as well . . . Where is the snark? ;o)
Whenever someone comes in with ratty hair or clothes for a true emergency (eg. one of the 3 or 4 patients we get each day who woke up with chest pain) and apologizes for their hair or ratty pajamas, I always say, "If you spent a long time primping to come to the ER, you probably don't need to be here."
So, yeah...if you plan your ER visit three days in advance because that's your day off work, then just don't even come in.
That was a good post Scalpel. :)
Maggie...maybe they were checking out Doctor September in Medblog Addicts blog. ;)
That's true nurse k. When I awoke with the kidney stone attack, assault...whatever, I could not brush my teeth, comb my hair, etc and I went to ER in my nightgown and robe because I could not fathom wearing real clothes pressing against my flank etc., and I did apologize in between vomiting, writhing in pain and being so gorked on morphine that I could hardly form the words to keep asking for more (but I DID)as well as hardly open my eyes. Oh and of course I hadn't shaved my legs either! Not a pretty sight! Then the assistant pastor from my church came in to see me before going to OR (sweet but embarrassing) and as I am looking so ragged and vomiting he calls a hospital employee (Not ER staff but someone walking through ER)over to meet me. Talk about 1st impressions - yikes! And did that person REALLY want to meet me over the vomit tub? Funny now but wasn't then. :)
Conversely, 16 mos later on the night I finally agreed to go to the ER (because I thought I waited too long and might be dying now)I presented really ill, febrile, etc with sepsis, etc, etc. from totally constricted ureter. I don't know how I did it with the to the bone chills and all the horrible symptoms I was experiencing but I somehow forced my self to wash face, brush teeth and hair,(one thing at a time-then collapse on bed)walk to car, collapse in car and needed wheelchair to get in to hospital.
I guess kidney stone pain trumps being at death's door kind of sick. and I still apologized for not having a shower that day because I was so ill. I KNOW you guys don't care but still embarrassing.
Scalpel...what DID you delete? ;)
P.S. It was so stupid of me not to go to ER but I kept hoping meds given to me by ER doc nite before would work.
