No Mocking Allowed!

"They were supposed to be saving lives, not mocking them."

Two paramedics made an outrageous 50-minute tape on the job that shows their crude interactions with hookers and bums - and a nasty running commentary making fun of patients, neighborhoods and the FDNY, as reported by the New York Post.

The pair was forced to resign last week, but the public had no idea just how badly they betrayed their badges.

The disturbing revelations included:
  • Running derogatory comments
  • Mean-spirited pokes at the homeless
  • Nasty pranks on drunks
  • Sleeping while on duty
  • Shocking prostitute breast exposures
  • Raunchy lewd jokes at the expense of patients
  • Photographing patients without department permission
  • Personnel mocking their departments and their jobs
Gee, I've never done any of those things.

For those of us who might be characterized as mean-spirited mockers of homeless drunk prostitutes and other assorted interesting characters, anonymity is our friend. We should cherish and honor our friend, never betraying him, or else the PC police might smack us in the head with their humorless baton.

"They played it for a load of laughs, but it wasn't a joke once it went high up," an FDNY insider said.

Exactly.

So, you think mean-spirited jokes at the homeless is acceptable behavior for a supposed professional? Why am I not surprised?

Their mistake was doing it on-duty. But it's a bit of a slippery slope.

Scalpel- the PC police are onto you, too, my friend.

Repeat after me: "No, gentle reader, I would never find entertainment at the expense of those less fortunate than me. That would be mean."

DO NOT SAY: "Well, gentle reader, if those less fortunate than me would kindly stop exploiting my hard earned money in the form of public assistance, and stop exploiting my job in the form of drug-seeking and generally wasting my time with BS and rudeness, I would stop making fun of them."

Also DO NOT SAY: "Gentle Reader, my well of compassion would runneth over if the homeless would stop crapping in front of our office entrance, the prositutes would stop having sex on our cars, the drug addicts would clean up their assorted accoutrement and bodily fluids instead of leaving them in our parking lot, and the mentally ill would TAKE THEIR MEDS."

I have to believe that folks like "anonymous" seldom experience working with or in the homeless/mentally ill/drug using population. "Supposed professionals" are better off laughing and joking about the insanity they see, rather than normalizing it or seething with rage.

But videotaping it...mmm, not too smart.

better to laugh, even at them, than cry. and obtw first anonymous, if being mean-spirited is bad is "unacceptable behavior" then why are you being mean-spirited in your post? screw you pal. YOU go take care of them.

Agreed. The homeless don't want the artificial compassion of someone who has probably never gotten any closer to them than averting their gaze from the comfort and safety of their automobile when one of them approaches him at the stoplight.

All they want is a climate-controlled place to get out of the elements, if only for a night. And occasionally to have their wounds cleaned and dressed.

And maybe a sandwich.

And some milk (can ya make it two?)

And perhaps some of those footie things we have. Yes, you can keep the blanket. We've got plenty.

And a cup of coffee, if we've got one.

And how about a pain shot for the road?

And a refill on their ________.

See you next week!

Look on the bright side: at least they don't need a note for work!

Okay, it's *okay* to make fun of those sorts of patients, as long as they do the funny shit on their own.

You can't tip the drunk over, but when he face plants on his own, it's okay to laugh.

I had a stripper who decided to quit after getting her ass whipped by another stripper at a club once. She had patent leather thigh high boots that she threw in the trash.
So we dug them out and all took turns wearing them and taking pictures of one another...
She also gave me her number. If doing all that is wrong... I don't wanna be right!

If you read my blog, you'll remember the proper term for homeless men is "urban outdoorsmen". ;-)

I can't mock. I am not judging you either. I don't walk in your shoes. It's just not in me to mock. That doesn't mean I don't have the thoughts. Although, I really don't have mocking thoughts - more like I disagree with something or I don't want to be around you - but i don't belittle anyone.

It's not that I don't see humor in things - believe me - I DO.

I guess I just think that none of us know what might happen in the future. I know some of them bring it on themselves.

I guess I just do or say things the way I would want done for me.

Sorry if this sounds sappy. I don't deal with the things you guys do day in and day out.

I totally disagree with what the paramedics did. Photographing patients? Without permission? Cruel pranks? Putting it on video? REALLY STUPID! Wait did I just mock them? ;)
