Two Americas

There are those of us who cut our own hair, there are many more who pay a nominal fee at Supercuts or some such chain, and there are those who take money from their campaign contributors to pay a Beverly Hills stylist $400 for a haircut. While sitting on a throne getting a pedicure, no doubt.

Is it still called a "haircut" if it costs $400? Or is there a fancier name for it? For that much money, he should have gotten a happy ending.

I confess that I have no idea how a haricut could possibly cost $400. I pay about 15 bucks every month or so and I have an excellent barber who uses the vacuum thingy so I don't get hair down my shirt.

But $400? More power to the barber who can command that kind of bling but really, you'd think a guy trying to convince us that he's a man of the people would have a little more common sense. If I were a senator I think I'd go for the traditional barbershop and not a salon like some Kansas City fancy woman.

Personally I don't give a rat's patoot if the guy paid $600 for a haircut and $200 for a bikini wax. Just don't rip off the taxpayers for the honor. Gad, I want to be annointed too.

I wouldn't care how much he paid for his haircut if he wasn't going around with his "two Americas" BS. If you're going to be a man of the people, either make it clear it's not the little people, or go to SuperCuts like everyone else.

John Edwards hasn't a clue. I'm more weirded out by making one's career off junk science which resulted in putting OB/GYNs out of business.

I get my hair cut for $4.00 at a barber shop just off the local Air Force Base. The barber's a really old coot who is well into retirement but likes to keep busy and loves talking to people, esp. the USAF folks. Every time I go in there, the place is packed with customers waiting and shooting the breeze. I go there for the camaraderie and conversation. There's no fluff at the place. Very plain and ordinary. A couple of chairs, some military posters on the wall. Some model military aircrafts. The old man's WWII memorabilias. Just a good ol' place that you wouldn't mind spending time waiting over an hour for a simple old fashion hair cut.

No one ever pays him $4 bucks, of course. I've not seen anyone forked out less than $15.

Why do people care so much about Edwards? He's not going to win the Democratic nomination anyway (oh please don't make me eat my words on this, election gods).

Hey, Lynn, thanks for the visual of Edwards getting a bikini wax. Eeewww!

I'm a super cuts girl, and I wish that Edwards would give up the bull about being “a regular Joe,” just like me. Inside my chest beats the heart of a tree hugging, bleeding heart liberal, but if that man wins the nomination, I’m going to have to take a serious look at going over to the “dark side,” and voting for the Republican candidate. Seriously, Rudy Giuliani is starting to look good.

Nurse Kelly, not only does he put OB/GYNs out of business, I have no doubt in my mind he has played a large part in creating current anti-VBAC climate. I am active on the message boards for Mothering magazine, and to see so many anti-routine-c/s women supporting him is just mindblowing.

Mother Jones--in my fmr. nursing school and current union, Republicans are looked down upon and chastised. I actually wrote a letter to the director of our statewide nurses' union for a letter she wrote in a publication saying it was "unethical" for us to support "the Republicans" on a certain tax bill that would have basically obliterated small buisness in the state of MN by requiring them to provide insurance for its employees, even if they only had 1 employee. This bill was supposedly good for the uninsured.

I explained that these types of bills only serve to get people fired or for people to not hire because the small employer would oftentimes be unable to pay the cost of the insurance, which can run about $1500/month for family coverage.

I know it's hard for nurses to vote Republican when all the leaders tell you you're 'unethical' or unsavory for doing so (a horrible thing to call someone), but a basic Econ course tells you that lower taxes and fewer subsidies actually decreases poverty and decreases things like out of wedlock child birth. It increases jobs, increases salaries of the people who alreaady work, etc. Dems are also usually against things like protection for physicians against frivolous lawsuits, which has the effect of increasing healthcare costs.

The Dems play the emotional trick-game of guilting people into thinking lower taxes take away, when, in fact, statistically they give.

BTW, the union leader I wrote to met me for breakfast and offered me a job...hehe. Yeah right.

Hi Nurse Kelly:

It’s shameful that someone would suggest that supporting one political party over another is unethical. The last time I check, we were still living in America, and we can chose to support whomever we want. It’s a pity that the political arena is becoming so partisan. I like talking to others with different opinions from my own, and that’s why I follow Scalpel’s blog. I’ve engaged in some lively debates, I’ve given and received some good-natured political heel nipping, and I have never felt disrespected by anyone on this blog. I’m really sorry that you had a bad experience with your union’s leadership.

Just as a side note, I was a Dem before I entered nursing school. My mother thinks my political leaning is based in genetics (both my parents were liberals), but I don't think it has anything to do with the gene pool. My mother's cousin is a Republican in the U.S. Senate. You should hear the debates we have at our family reunions!

Edwards didn't always have money. He worked hard for it and now he has a nice house and he can spend whatever he wants for a haircut, or a restaurant meal, or a party for his kids.

Rich political insiders aren't the only people who deserve to have it well.

So instead of taking shots at Edwards, who just wants other people to have the same chances that he did, why don't you aim your rightwing-radio talking points at the people who have placed America in so much debt that your own kids will still be paying off when you're long gone?
