Meteor collision - averted!!!!!

This is a cute video. I consider global warming loonies to be just as histrionically ridiculous as meteor-fearers, btw. But this response to the meteor problem seems at least as likely as the Kyoto Treaty to save our planet from disaster. Technology > nature, right?

It's only a one minute video, so watch it. Even the most fervent and humorless doomsday scenario devotees will crack a smile. I promise.

Meanwhile, despite the impending doom of global warming, there was still snowfall at President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas yesterday. In April. Brrrr.

Guess I shouldn't have packed away my winter coat.

LOL that video is cute!

And yea, the weather sucks. I get back from Brazil, where it was 32C by 9 am and it &#$^#* snows the next day!!!!!!!

Global warming my ass!

hmm, by global warming loonies are you talking about basically every single person who knows anything about climate science and how they think it exists and is a real issue; or are you talking about every single person who doesn't know a thing about it outside of petty anecdotes regarding their front yards and windshields on their cars, has never studied it academically a day in their lives and can't get a peer-reviewed study published to save their lives?

just wondering.

look, i keep walking and i never sink!!! the world really IS flat!!!

Oh, come on.

The boy got his undergrad in metereological sciences. Even he admits that global warming is happening. The question is: how much of global warming is affected by humans and how much can we stop? And what will be the effects of mass global warming? Looking back in history, global warming has actually been a boon to most societies. So what are we really dealing with?

You're an utter fool to totally deny global warming. Yes, you can still admit to global warming and be a conservative who isn't a shill of the oil industry.

Exactly!! And the answer is: 1) some, and 2) not enough to matter. I don't totally deny global warming. Why do global warming loonies deny that there are cyclical changes in temperature throughout history and that the percentage of it that we could purposely affect is negligible?

Arrogant liberals think they can change the weather by taxing big business and driving a Prius. Some think it's OK to overutilize as long as you pay extra for "carbon offsets."

Me? I don't really care about things that won't happen until after I'm long gone from this earth, so whatever y'all decide is fine by me. I just like to make fun of hand-wringing hypocrites.

No, the sky is NOT falling. Go back inside the Starbucks; it's gonna be OK.

Being a liberal (maybe loony, maybe not), I do feel that global warming is something that shouldn't be written off and ignored. Regardless of how much was originally caused by us, I think it's obvious that we are helping it along to some extent.

Also, driving a Prius doesn't make one arrogant; it just makes one better liked in bumper-to-bumper traffic. I'll breathe in the air around a Prius any day.

I like Priuses, and I would be proud to drive one. A hybrid makes sense for a lot of reasons.

Trying to reduce global warming isn't one of them.

Not all scientists agree that global warming is 1) caused by human activity or 2) something we should be worrying about.

Check this review, if you're actually interested (and not just interested in repeating the left-wing agenda-based talking points).

Thanks, Ace.

I don't think global warming should be written off, either. But what scares me more as a wildlife conservationist is pollution and wildlife habitat destruction. There are more immediate problems out there that we have more control over.

Traditionally, global warming periods have actually benefitted humans. (Compare the 1100s to the 1300s in terms of agricultural output, etc.) Will global warming kill off plants and animals? Yes. Will other animals (especially animals such as foragers, who are extremely adaptable as a whole) flourish? Yup. But, again, I worry more about the dozens of animals that go extinct every year because of such activities as mass-scale clearing of rainforests for farm land.

And what does this current global warming trend likely predict? Another ice age, of which we are loong overdue for.

Humans have fucked with the planet, no doubt. We definitely put that hole in the ozone layer that is currently hovering over New Zealand. We cause massive habitat pollution and destruction and we over-hunt/fish species until they teeter on the brink of destruction.

Being pro-environmentalist and doing your part to minimize pollution is a *good* thing; but the global warming hyper-freaks have co-opted the whole movement and made it hard for people like myself, who work in animal/habitat conservation, to form much needed coalitions that defy party lines. (And usually have. Some of the best conservation efforts in the US come from conservative-hunter-types.)

Absolutely. I'm much more sympathetic to wildlife conservation and pollution concerns, because those are issues that we can have more of a definite impact on than our (suspect at best) ability to alter global temperatures.

Interestingly, mass clearing of wetlands would probably have much more of a beneficial effect on global temperatures than any proposed regulation of industry ever would. I'd rather save the wetlands.

Humans can use our brains better by learning to adapt to higher temperatures than to embark on foolhardy attempts to change the climate. Can we stop a hurricane? Prevent an earthquake? Cap a volcano? Even cause an itty-bitty rainshower? No? Then WTF makes anyone think we can cool the earth? What a joke.

Hannah - I'm more with you than those that use scare tactics. I realize that the earth goes through temperature cycles, and this warming trend was going to happen whether or not we did a damn thing. But yeah, we've done some fucked up shit to this world.

Scalpel - I looked at your link (see, I told you I wasn't loony), but confess I didn't have time to read the whole thing (I do my blogging at work). I think I got the gist of it though.

Again, I don't believe in scare tactics (for anything) because they have a way of shadowing those who are moderate minded and want to see both sides of the issue. I'm more of an environmentalist than I am a global warming-alist. I think that a lot of humans, especially Americans, can do more to help the world we depend on. It seems like some just don't give a shit, and that's frustrating and worrisome. At least take care of the place the best you can while you're here, right?

Dooodz, until we clear the wetlands and freakin' hell, Nah Ohlins' is driven under water.

Natch, I do think that industry should should be held to task for what they've done in regards to pollution and habitat destruction. I do not stray far from my liburel roots. (kisses to caroline!)

But I'm pragmatic and have long strayed from being an idealist liberal. Generally, in regards to global warming, I have to take a "wait and see" approach because we simply do not know entirely what will happen.

Cut out pollution and habitat destruction, etc., and we will /see/ what it does in regards to global warming; but we -will- conserve our environment in other ways that are important. :)

great conversation! i admittedly ripped this video from your blog and put it on mine - so thanks for that.

this is my first post on your blog - so pardon me for jumping in. you all are making some great points about the whole global warming issue. my overall disgust is just our general disregard for all things natural on this planet. i truly believe that all things are connected in this world and the fact that we're all ready to just kill, destroy and maim, hell let's throw in rape and pillage also - everything in our way with no ill effects, we've gotta be crazy. just keep dumpin' that garbage in the ocean and bury it deep. i mean, what is that? while the population just keeps growing and growing??

we've gotta be a little more on the self-sustaining side and less on the plague of locusts side.

anyway, scalpel, i really enjoy reading your blog. i am an ICU nurse up in MN and love reading your perspective.

by-the-way, we're getting 8 inches of snow tonight. happy spring!
