A Holiday of Sorts
I can't ever recall a shift such as the one I had last night. We were busy, sure...it was Monday after all. But all of the radiology studies were negative:No fractures.
No pneumonias.
No CHFers.
No bowel obstructions.
I didn't even order a CT scan all night long. On anybody.
All of the abdominal pains were seemingly benign and easily controlled with only one dose of medication. The back pains were all of the acute variety. All of the vomiters stopped vomiting. All of the WBC's were well within normal range. One lady did have a positive troponin, but she was going to be admitted anyway. Nobody was whiny, not even the kiddos.
I even got two hours sleep on a stretcher after clearing out the ER by 5 am. That never happens.

Enjoy it now because during the next full moon, things will heat up.
enjoy it while it lasts...
btw is it true about the full moon thing?
Deep down, I honestly don't believe the full moon affects us much in the ER. But I cringe when someone uses the Q word. Or the S word.
Superstitions are fun, but I don't take them too seriously. They just add a little spice to life.
It hasn't - it is all a dream from which you will wake up with a searing sense of resentment. And after that you will be punished for not crossing yourself after seeing a black cat, not doffing your cap to a magpie that you saw in the morning and ostentatiously walking under a ladder.

I had a shift like that this week. I almost felt guilty at first, then I realized it was well deserved after the endless pile of sh** that must be shoveled on most days.
I have always been superstitious about swapping call. Every time I do it I get hammered. But I swapped Monday for Tuesday this week, and didn't get a call. One thing for certain, you need to make the most of the Q and S times, because you will catch up eventually. And never say the words.
The best part about shifts like that are that you feel like you actually know what you are doing... I'd rather have a night like that than hit a hole in one.
